Playstation had the longest press conference of the first day of E3. They started strong and ended strong, but they had a huge rough spot in the middle. Sony spent way too much time not talking about games. The Vita didn’t get much love, too many irrelevant stats were shown and the event didn’t have much surprises. However, the conference was saved by the games that had an amazing trailer to show off what is in store for Playstation within the next year.
The middle of the conference showed off Playstation TV, Playstation Now and a bunch of other features for the Playstation Network. The reveal that the PS TV is coming to North America is welcome, and I’m glad that PS Now is coming soon, but when they focused on their TV series Powers, I was rolling my eyes. Last year Sony stated they were all about games, and to have them come out and spend so much time on media was disappointing.
Sony did end strong with Uncharted 4 and Batman: Arkham Knight though. Both games looked fantastic, and they seem to be the end game for their respective series. The Order 1886 looked better than its previous showing and Littlebigplanet 3 looked as adorable as ever. Even though the folks playing it messed up a bit, it added to the adorable lore of the new characters of LBP3. Project Beast was revealed as Bloodborne, a new IP for the Playstation 4. From Software is developing the game strictly for the Playstation 4, bringing a much needed exclusive to the PS4 library. Other than the new games show, a lot of remastered versions of previous games were announced. GTA V, The Last of Us, the original Ratchet and Clank, and Grim Fandango are all getting remastered for the Playstation 4.
Sony showed a ton of games, but the conference itself was bogged down by the focus on stats and media in the middle of the event. The games that were shown all had impressive trailers and demos, so the show wasn’t all bad. Still no word on The Last Guardian, but the future of Playstation looks strong.
